MLHS Course Spotlight

Course: Environmental Science SCI1014
Instructor: Mr. Joel Barthel
Grade Level: 10-12
This past Thursday (10/18) the Environmental Science class took readings and collected samples from the local Manitowoc River (like dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, pH). Then on Friday (10/19) they conducted a "biotic Index" of those samples back in the lab (the index is a weighted score based on the macroinvertebrate species they find). The physical and biological measurements not only gave them hands on experience, but it will help in gauging the water quality, and provide a real world baseline for future lessons.
Environmental Science is a full-year course designed to help students become better stewards of the creation God has given them. The interactions of plants, animals, and humans in their environments are studied. Concepts are reinforced with application activities, hands-on laboratory experiments, projects, and collaborative research work both online and in the field.
What is your favorite thing about teaching Environmental Science?
"My favorite thing is I get to grow in my appreciation of how interwoven and connected everything is." -Joel Barthel
