MLHS FINE ARTS NEWSLETTER - APRIL 2025

“Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise...after all, the gift of language combined with the gift of song was only given to man to let him know that he should praise God with both word and music, namely, by proclaiming the Word of God through music.”

Martin Luther

State Forensics Results

Lancer Forensics had a sizable group (21 students in all!) qualify for WISDAA State Speech Festival on April 12 for their final meet of the year. We are so proud of the whole team and for their enthusiasm to not only use their God-given talents but also support one another toward their individual goals. The team once again had a strong showing and earned the following awards to finish the season: Achievement (Small Bronze) - Ebbott Fields Finalist (Bronze) - Peter Knauf; Christina He & Kaly Wang; James Krause All State (Silver) - Hannah Taylor; Callie Sawall; Elijah Ruddat; Emeline Ruddat; Sorcha Hang Critic’s Choice (Gold) - Elizabeth Vogt; Uriah Van Deurzen, Dominic Carrico, & Paul Krause; Coltyn Lyon & Tristan Hulse; Rayahna Gaedtke, Paige Holschbach, & Hadley Bastian; Anya Hochmuth; Elinor Wall

WSMA State

We had 47 WSMA events qualify for state this year which will take place at UW-Green Bay on Saturday, May 3. Congratulations to all of our State Qualifiers and God’s blessings on your performances!

Meet the Fine Arts Students of the Month!

Elizabeth Vogt, 10th Grade

What Fine Arts classes/activities have you been a part of so far? Cantate Choir, Concert Choir, Lancer Singers, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin, Spring Musical, Pit Orchestra, Forensics, Lesson Program, Big East Honors Band, WELS Band Fest

Non-Fine Arts Activities: Softball, Cross Country

Highlight of Being in Fine Arts: I like being able to grow as a musician, and I think that I have made a lot of really good friends by being involved in the Fine Arts program.

Reason for Nomination: Elizabeth has been very active in the Fine Arts department throughout the year. She achieved a gold at state for forensics and will be performing at WSMA State for six different events on piano, voice, clarinet, and tenor saxophone. Not only has Elizabeth seen great success this year, but she is also an incredible servant leader. She assisted with the Jr Lancer Youth Choir, accompanied choral anthems, played in chapel, and served as clarinet section leader. She even bounced back and forth between being on stage and playing in the pit orchestra during the spring musical. And make sure you catch her this summer marching with Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin!

Fine Arts Banquet—Wednesday, May 15

Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of the MLHS Fine Arts students! We will provide meat, buns, and beverages. The cost is $5 per person and will be added to your family’s TADs account after the banquet. The rest is up to you—please bring along a salad, side dish, or dessert. Dinner is served at 6pm. Awards will begin as soon as everyone has been through the serving line.

Prism Concerts—Saturday, May 10

The Prism Concerts are unlike any of our other concerts throughout the year. All large ensembles perform (Cantate & Concert Choirs, Symphonic Band, LS, Jazz Lab & Band), but we also get to feature many other smaller acts such as solos, dancers, instrumentalists, etc. while you enjoy popcorn and lemonade. The concerts start at 4pm and 7pm. Sign up to help: https://signup.com/go/mwtOkre

MAY 2025 FINE ARTS SCHEDULE

Tips for Supporting the Arts at Home—Tip 5

View music and art as a marathon, not a sprint.

In this fast-paced world of instant gratification, it isn’t always easy to teach children that the best things in life come to those that wait and work hard. It is important to view the learning of music and art as a marathon and not as a sprint. Investing in private lessons means slow and steady progress. There will be times they want to quit...every student experiences it. You may even get tired of the fight to make them practice, but don’t give up! Remember that investing in music and art is giving your child a gift that will never expire. It is one of the only activities that truly lasts a lifetime

WSMA Lakeshore Concert Festival Results

Our school participates in the WSMA Lakeshore Concert Festival at Roncalli every other year. On April 29th and 30th, our ensembles performed in front of three adjudicators and then worked with a clinician from a college or university for a while. Concert Choir received 1s from all three judges. Cantate Choir received two 1s and a 2. Symphonic Band received two 1s and a 2 as well. All three groups performed very well and were wonderful representatives of our school. We are so proud of the growth they have shown throughout the year and hope to see them all continue making music wherever they are headed next year!
