The MLHS girls varsity basketball team had an intense week back at home, losing a close game to Ozaukee on Tuesday, but then defeating Howards Grove Friday, revenging a loss earlier in the season to the Tigers. The Lancers are now 11-7 (8-5 Big East) on the season.
The Lancers could not quite pull out the win Tuesday, losing to Ozaukee 57-54 after being tied 20-20 at the half. Senior MonRaye Ermis led the way with 14 points and 9 rebounds, while classmate Sydney Stubbe chipped in 11 points. Junior Jenna Lischka had 9 points, and senior Brooklyn Luebke tallied 9 points and 13 rebounds. Three Lancers fouled out of the game.
Friday the Lancers started slowly and were down 13-1 to the Tigers in the early stages of the game. We came on strong at that point, both offensively and defensively, coming back to take a 21-19 lead at halftime on the way to our 45-41 win. Senior Emily Marohn put the game away with two clutch free throws with 3.5 seconds to go. Lischka led the way with 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Ermis had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Marohn added 11 points and Luebke had 7.
Two Lancers were nominated for “Player of the Week” honors by the Herald Times Reporter the past two weeks: Jenna Lischka was a nominee two weeks ago, and MonRaye Ermis received a nomination this past week. Congratulations to those players and the whole Lancer girls team for their hard work and success!
In JV action last week, JV1 defeated Ozaukee 61-29 and improved their record to a stellar 13-1. The JV game against Howards Grove was cancelled by Howards Grove.
This week the Lancers travel to Oostburg Tuesday to take on the Flying Dutchmen (14-4, 11-2 Big East South) in a 7:15pm tip-off (JV1 5:50pm), and then welcome the Resorters of Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah (4-14, 1-12 Big East North) for a 7pm conference matchup (JV1 5:50pm) in the Lancer gym on Friday. We defeated the Resorters 63-36 in a Dec. 21st game this season. Our girls JV2 team travels to Freedom Friday for a 5:40pm game.
