Last week the Lancer girls basketball team went 1-1 with a 59-45 victory over Sheboygan Christian on Tuesday, but then met up with state-ranked St. Mary Catholic on Thursday, and lost 61-42.
The Lancers scored early and often in their game against the Eagles Tuesday, taking a 39-14 lead into halftime with senior Brianna Bessler and junior Jenna Lischka each scoring 9 points in the first half, all on 3-pointers. The Lancers’ scoring cooled a bit in the second half, while the Eagles doubled their first half production during the second period, but it wasn’t enough for the Eagles to overcome us. Senior MonRaye Ermis led the way with 15 points, followed by Lischka with 13.
Thursday, we were unable to keep up with the conference-leading Zephyrs, whose only loss so far this season was in November against Mishicot. We went into halftime down by 13 points (33-20), on the way to the 61-42 defeat. Senior Emily Marohn led all Lancer scorers with 16 points. JV1 also lost that night to the Zephyrs, and now holds a 14-3 record.
Our 13-9 (10-7 Big East) Lancers are now tied for third in the Big East North with Howards Grove. We have two regular-season games left before post-season play begins. Tonight (Monday) we travel to Hilbert to take on the 12-10 (9-8 Big East) Wolves at 7:15pm (JV1 5:50pm), We defeated the Wolves 58-25 on January 4th. Then Thursday we welcome the Crusaders of Sheboygan Lutheran to our gym for a 7:15pm tip-off (JV1 5:50pm). That Thursday night game is the last game of the season for JV1. JV2 has back-to-back home games this week to finish their season, hosting Waupaca tonight (Monday) at 6:30pm and then welcoming Two Rivers to the Lancer gym Tuesday night at 6pm.
Post-season girls basketball tournament seeding has been announced by the WIAA, and the Lancers have been awarded a #4 seed and first-round bye in the Division 4 bracket. On Friday, Feb. 25th at 7pm we open WIAA play in the second round, with a game against #5 Howards Grove. (The WIAA bracket was updated today to show that #12 Destiny has forfeited their first-round match against the Tigers.)
God’s blessings, Lady Lancers, on your last two regular-season games this week!
