Japan Exchange Program

Every year, Manitowoc Lutheran High School pairs up with the Manitowoc International Relations Association (MIRA) to send local high school students to our sister city Kamogawa, Japan.

Last year, two MLHS students went on the exchange trip to Japan, along with four other high school students.

About MIRA

The Manitowoc International Relations Association (MIRA) is a City of Manitowoc committee that acts as the liaison between the citizens and officials of the City of Manitowoc and the citizens and officials of the City of Kamogawa, Japan, which have entered into a sister city relationship to encourage international understanding through a program of educational, cultural, and economic exchanges.

MIRA coordinates information and resources to maintain and expedite the sister city relationship with Kamogawa, Japan, and with any international community that has as its goal the pursuit of culture, education and peace. Members meet throughout the year to organize and coordinate various activities between both cities including delegation trips, the student exchange program, student pen pal and art exchanges, and more!

The relationship between Manitowoc and Kamogawa began in 1993. The bonds of friendship have grown between each city’s citizens and continue to flourish with each visit and passing year. The relationship remains strong 30 years later.

About Kamogawa

Kamogawa is a Pacific oceanfront city in Wisconsin’s sister-state Chiba Prefecture. Kamogawa and its friendly population of nearly 32,000 people welcomes nearly 3 million visitors annually. The many shrines and temples are a reminder of Kamogawa’s historical roots that date back to the 12th century.

Kamogawa’s year-round warm weather allows citizens and visitors alike to enjoy surfing, swimming, and fishing no matter what season. Kamogawa has been a chief producer of fish, rice, dairy products, and flowers since its foundation by samurai-leader Yoritomo Minamoto. Kamogawa is home to the world-famous Kamogawa See World, as well as home for the Chiba Lotte Marines professional baseball team.

Something On Your Mind?

We understand having your child travel abroad can be a scary and nerve-wracking experience. Below are some frequently asked questions that may help you learn more about the Japan Exchange trip.

Will My Host Family Speak English?

The vast majority of Japanese families have minimal understanding of English. They will know some words and basic conversations, but you will want to learn some basic Japanese and bring a translator or translating app to make the experience easier.

When should I Apply for My Passport?

If you do not currently have a passport, it is highly recommended you start the process now. The passport application link is attached in here. Passports can take months to be approved depending on the time of year, so it is better to start now then regret it later on.

How will I Pay for My Flight?

Students are allowed to create personal fundraisers to cover the cost of their travels. For instance, students have sold food at school and brought their trip up to their congregation to raise funds in the past.

Should I Get a SIM Card while I am in Japan?

It is not necessary to get a SIM card while you are abroad. Instead, make sure you are with another trusted person (supervisor, host sibling, host parent, etc.) when you are in Japan so that you can make your way around the area easily and safely. With this said, it is at the precaution of MIRA you should make this decision.

How can I Improve My Japanese Language Skills Before Arriving?

If you would like to improve your Japanese skills before going abroad, it is recommended to download Duolingo, HelloTalk, Rosetta Stone, etc., find free lessons on Spotify, or find courses on YouTube.

Can I bring My Family with Me?

Family will not be allowed to join you on your trip, but they are more than welcome to drive you to the airport themself and pick you up after your return.
