Girls Basketball Season Preview
The Lancer girls basketball teams will begin their season tomorrow night in Kohler with a conference game against the Blue Bombers. The JV game tips off at 5:50pm, followed by the varsity game at approximately 7:15pm. Then Saturday the Lancers will travel to Brillion for a non-conference game.
Coach Mike Behnke returns for his 6th
season heading up the Lancer girls program. Behnke has two returning starters from last year’s squad which finished with a 9-15 record (8-11 conference), and he looks to them and a core group of juniors with varsity experience to lead the team this year. He noted, “(Junior) MonRaye Ermis was a 2nd team all conference player last year and we look for her to bring a strong presence in the post. Senior Paige Zirbel gives us leadership and strong outside shooting. (We’re) also looking to get quality minutes from a core group of juniors that logged a lot of minutes on varsity last year. Also, (we’re) looking for some key juniors and sophomores to help take over the ball handling duties.” Behnke has 15 girls on his varsity squad – 3 seniors, 9 juniors, and 3 sophomores. His assistant coaches once again are (the other) Mike Behnke and Megan Lindemann.
When asked about his team’s strengths, Behnke replied, “Defense, team speed and depth will be strengths of ours this year, and should help us create some easy offense through generating turnovers. We will be looking for some players to step up and do some scoring for us to help with the loss of sophomore Jenna Lischka to an ACL injury for this season. We have a great group of girls and they have been practicing hard and are excited to play and show how good they can be. In today’s situation it is truly a blessing just to be able to play basketball and compete athletically. We are very thankful for the opportunities our Savior is giving us, and we intend to make the most of them.”
He continued, “I can't say enough about the girls and their resiliency so far through all the changes, quarantines, masks and social distancing. They are a special group and it begs to recognize all of them as they all will contribute in some way this year to help us compete. Seniors: Paige Zirbel, Abbee Olsen and Kallie Fels. Juniors: Emily Marohn, Brooklyn Luebke, MonRaye Ermis, Sydney Stubbe, Emma Miller, Aubry Schleis, Brianna Bessler, Helene Matthias, and Emma Kolar. Sophomores: Jenna Lischka, Mallory Mehlhorn, and Sam Siehr.”
Pending changes, the Lancers will play a 20-game season, starting with our first game against Kohler tomorrow night. The final regular season game is Friday, February 5th
against Sheboygan Lutheran. Eighteen of the games are conference games. The season is scheduled to then finish with WIAA playoffs and the State tournament. Behnke expects Mishicot, Howards Grove, and Oostburg to be the top teams in the Big East Conference, with the Lancers, St. Mary Catholic, and Random Lake all in the next tier, and better able to compete with those top three teams this year.
In addition, once again the Lancers are currently scheduled to compete December 29th
in the Christmas tournament at Roncalli High School, against the host Jets, Two Rivers and Reedsville.
The Lancers will also field one JV squad this year, consisting of 4 sophomores and 11 freshmen. New head coach Keturah Hochmuth takes the reigns of the JV program; she is assisted by varsity head coach Behnke.
Spectators are limited to two per athlete at all games this year. Livestreams of all games this season should be available – check the MLHS Livestream Link
